The genus Nonomuraea, which was corrected by Chiba et al. (1999) from the original spelling, Nonomuria, was originally proposed by Zhang et al. (1998) as a member of the family Streptosporangiaceae that forms extensively branched substrate and aerial mycelia. On the basis of detailed phylogenetic analyses, the genus presently comprises 17 species and two subspecies, most of which were listed by Gyobu and Miyadoh (2001), Stackebrandt et al. (2001) and Quintana et al. (2003). During the course of isolation and characterization of a novel actinomycete from a mangrove rhizosphere mud in the southern area of Bangladesh, we isolated strain 16-5-14, which showed typical morphological characteristics of the genus Nonomuraea. In this paper we describe the characterization and classification of the strain and propose Nonomuraea maheshkhaliensis sp. nov.
